Album Review: Mac Demarco and the Flaming Lips at The Shrine
By Martin Espinoza
When I heard Mac Demarco and the Flaming Lips were touring together, I
knew I couldn’t miss this show. I’m a huge fan of both of them and have wanted to
see them both for quite some time, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see
them both in the same night.
Mac opened and had a great performance. He played some of his songs from
his newest album, while also pleasing fans by playing his biggest, most popular
songs. Seeing Mac and his band perform made me so happy. They all seemed so
happy on stage and looked to genuinely be having fun up there. They finished their
set with a cover of Running with the Devil by Van Halen, which had Mac
screaming “Ain’t no Sammy Hagar here!” and jumping off of speakers. I mean,
how can you not have a good time with that going on?
Then came the Flaming Lips. I remember the first time I saw a video of a
Flaming Lips concert on TV. I was 11 years old and thought to myself, “I have to
see these guys one day!” And let me tell ya, they did not disappoint! Their
performance was minding blowing! Lead singer Wayne Coyne rode a chariot
through the crowd! He got inside a giant, inflatable ball and walked on top of the
crowd! There were giant pink robots, rainbows, a light up gong, balloons, a giant
disco ball, and some of the most amazing visuals I’ve seen! I can’t put into words
how incredible their performance was. Maybe I’m biased because I’m such a huge
fan of them, but I promise you, if you see the Flaming Lip in concert, you will
have a fantastic time. Their shows are bucket list material.
